A Brief History of the Gold Rush
The California Gold Rush (1848–1855) began on January 24, 1848, when gold was discovered by James Marshall at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California. As a result, about three hundred thousand people went to the mountains of California to find their own gold.
These early gold-seekers, called "forty-niners," traveled to California by sailing ship and in covered wagons across the continent, often facing substantial hardships on the trip. While most of the newly-arrived were Americans, the Gold Rush attracted tens of thousands from Latin America, Europe, Australia and Asia.
Billions of dollars worth of gold was found, and a lucky few became rich. However, when the gold rush ended in 1855, the majority of the gold-seekers returned home not a penny richer.

food!
During the camp, many native - and a few not so native, see following picture below - dishes were consumed.
Foods we liked: Fruit salad, pancakes, maple syrup, brownies with ice cream, scrambled eggs, bacon, cheesecake, marshmallows
Foods we didn’t like: baked potatoes with meat, pasta
Interesting facts:
Maple syrup is made from the sap of maple trees.
Marshmallows were invented by a man named Mr. Marsh who was a very mellow fellow.

Campfire Tunes

On Saturday night, everyone gathered around the campfire and sang some tunes. Included here are the lyrics of some of our favourites:
Alice
Sally called when she got the word,
She said, I suppose you've heard about Alice
So I rushed to the window, and I looked outside
I could hardly believe my eyes
When a big limousine came slowly down into Alice's drive
Oh, I don't know why she's leaving, or where she's gonna go
I guess she's got her reasons but I just don't want to know
For twenty-four years I've been living next door to Alice
(Alice, who the hell is Alice?)
Twenty-four years just waiting for a chance
To tell her how I'm feeling and maybe get a second glance
I've got to get used to not living next door to Alice
(Alice, who the hell is Alice?)
We walked together, two kids in the park
Carved our initials deep in the bark,
Me and Alice
Now she walks through the door with her head held high
Just for a moment, I caught her eye
The big limousine came slowly down, into Alice's drive
(chorus)
Sally called back and she asked how I felt
She said I know how to help get over Alice
She said Alice is gone but I'm still here
You won't be waiting for twenty-four years
And the big limousine disapeared

The Beatles
In the town where I was born
Lived a man who sailed to sea
And he told us of his life
In the land of submarines
So we sailed up to the sun
Till we found a sea of green
And we lived beneath the waves
in our yellow submarine
We all live in a yellow submarine
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
We all live in a yellow submarine
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
And our friends are all aboard
Many more of them live next door
And the band begins to play
We all live in a yellow submarine
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
We all live in a yellow submarine
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
As we live a life of ease
Every one of us has all we need
Sky of blue and sea of green
In our yellow submarine
We all live in a yellow submarine
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
We all live in a yellow submarine
Yellow submarine, yellow submarine
We all live in a yellow submarine
